Diomedes Environmental was established by 2 university students in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Our goal is to help make climate change a more discussed issue in NI and Ireland as a whole. We aim to put students at the heart of the discussion, with a wide range of cultures and varying topics of education we can create a ‘think-tank’ type environment, where we discuss the current issues we face and scheme-up potential solutions.

So, what inspired this? Across the world we are already seeing the effects of climate change: Wildfires, droughts, coral bleaching and hurricanes continually plague our news channels. However, the consensus is that this is a ‘world away’ affecting tropical regions but not us. We also look at the opposite environments such as polar ice caps melting through the same eyes. But we must ask, how ignorant are we to think the entire world will be affected but it can’t affect us? Can we continue to live in a completely unsustainable way and expect to not face the consequences? We can already see our winters becoming warmer, summers becoming wetter and natural environments such as lough Neagh and the river Bann being plagued by blue-green algae.
With all this in mind, what can we do? That’s what we’ve been asking ourselves for quite some time, and in complete honesty, we don’t have all the answers. That’s what Diomedes is really for… This is our way of getting everyone involved, a platform that focuses around asking questions, coming up with ideas and finding ways of making an impact. Through Diomedes we hope to engage people from various backgrounds in the hope to educate and tell the stories of those affected by climate change. This platform is going to be a foundation of diverse content on which we plan to build upon. We will explore the science behind what is happening, we will hear stories from experts and those most affected and we hope to bring stories of the good that people in our communities are doing. We also want to hear from you! This will be a place for you to share your story whether it is damage you have seen with your own eyes, or if you want to share initiative you have taken to cut down your environmental impact.
And why the name Diomedes? Diomedes is found in Greek mythology as a hero in the trojan war. During this battle he fought with two of the Gods – Aphrodite and Ares – injuring both. For any mortal to take on the Gods, then it is obvious that the odds were not in his favour. This is why his name is so fitting for fighting the climate crisis. If you look through all the news it seems as though the odds are entirely stacked against us. It appears we are powerless in this fight, but we don’t believe that is true, we believe that if Diomedes can be victorious against the Gods, then maybe we can be victorious in this Climate crisis.
What now? This is where you come in, we are going to be opening a community section on our website in the very near future. This is an opportunity to get in touch, ask questions, conjure ideas and communicate with other like-minded individuals who feel as though there is more that could be done to fight the climate crisis here in Northern Ireland.
